Why Do You Want to Become a Crochet Designer?
Your Designer Why

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself why you want to become a crochet designer?

Maybe you love coming up with your own ideas. Maybe you dream of seeing other people wearing something you’ve designed. Or maybe you want to start selling crochet patterns and make some money from something you love.

Those are all good reasons.

But I want you to think about something a little deeper.

What do you really want to get out of becoming a crochet designer?

Not just the patterns you’ll create or the money you might make. What do you hope designing will bring into your life?

More freedom? To find your hidden creativity? The chance to do work you actually enjoy? Something that’s completely your own?

I wanted all of these.

You might already know the answer. Or you might need a little time to figure it out.

Either way, I want you to take a few minutes to explore it with me.

Because understanding why you want to become a crochet designer could be more important than you think.

Why Does Finding Your Why Matter?

Let’s be honest. Just like owning any business, owning a crochet design business isn’t always going to be easy.

You might write what you think is a wonderful pattern, publish it for sale, and hear nothing.

You might look at another designer’s work and wonder whether your own designs are good enough.

Sales go up and down like all other businesses.

And there may be days when you ask yourself:

Why am I putting so much time and effort into this?

That’s where knowing your Why can help.

When you understand what you’re working towards, it’s easier to remind yourself why you started in the first place.

It can help you decide what matters to you, what you’re willing to work towards, and what kind of person you want to become along the way.

It can also help you recognise when your goals are changing. Your dream doesn’t have to look the same forever.

But before you can understand your Why, let’s go back to the beginning.

Ready to Write Down Your Designer Why?

You’ve started exploring why you want to become a crochet designer. Now it’s time to put your thoughts on paper!

I’ve created a free My Designer Why worksheet to help you capture your why.

Keep it somewhere you can easily find it or pin it to your room wall. On the days when designing feels difficult, you can come back to it and remind yourself what you’re working towards.

First, Why Crochet?

Before you started thinking about designing your own patterns, you probably fell in love with crochet first.

But why crochet?

You could have chosen any number of hobbies. Yet something about crochet caught your attention.

Maybe you saw something beautiful someone had made and thought, “I want to make that!”

Maybe you loved having something to do with your hands.

Maybe you enjoyed turning a ball of yarn into something useful or beautiful.

Perhaps crochet was something you learned from a family member, or maybe it helped you relax after a long day.

Or perhaps you simply loved the feeling of making something with your own hands.

For me, crochet is no ordinary hobby. It has given me so much.

For likewise for some of us, crochet starts as a hobby and gradually becomes something much bigger.

And somewhere along the way, we begin to wonder:

What if I created something of my own?

Think about your own journey for a moment.

What first made you fall in love with crochet?

Was it the sense of calm? The feeling of accomplishment? The joy of making something beautiful? The pleasure of gifting your loved ones handmade items they treasure? Or was it something else entirely?

There’s no right or wrong answer.

Your story is your own, and understanding where it began can help you understand where you want to go next.

Why Do You Want to Become a Crochet Designer?

Here’s something interesting.

Loving crochet doesn’t automatically mean you want to become a designer.

You could sell finished crochet items. You could teach others how to crochet. Or you could simply enjoy making things for yourself and the people you love.

All of those are wonderful options.

But you’re thinking about designing your own patterns.

Why?

What is it about designing that appeals to you?

  • Maybe you have ideas in your head that you can’t wait to bring to life.
  • Maybe you want to create garments that fit the way you imagine them.
  • Maybe you love the challenge of working out how something is made.
  • Maybe you want to see other people making, wearing, and enjoying something you designed.

Or perhaps you want to build a business around your patterns and earn an income from your creativity.

Take a moment to think about this question:

What is it about designing that makes you want to give it a try?

Don’t worry about what other designers are doing or what you think your answer should be.

Focus on what excites you.

Because the reason you want to design may be very different from the reason someone else wants to do it.

There is a deeper reason you chose crochet.

And there is a deeper reason you’re now thinking about becoming a designer.

My story

For me, it started with my previous career.

I hardly ever say this but I am a doctor, a general physician, a family doctor. I studied at one of the best schools in my country. And from the surface, everything looked very successful.

Except I would wake up crying and anxious every day. I hated almost everything about being a doctor. And I was guilty because im suppsed to save lives not dislike my job.

I loved patients, I got too attached and I think deep down I am an empathy which made me very anxious.

One day I decided I cannot help anybody if I need help myself. And there are more ways than one to help people.

So I started looking for something that made me happy.

My grandma had left behind some yarn and hooks. And I remember always been curious and watching her crochet as a kid. Near my birthday in feb 2019, I took her yarn and hook and started crocheting from videos.

And the rest is history. I still get tingles every time I pick up my crochet hook. Crochet and designing completely changed my life.

I didn’t even know I was designer material. I get science, not art.

And yet, here I am.

So let me ask you: What could becoming a crochet designer make possible for you?

You don’t need to have a big, life-changing answer. But I encourage you to look beyond the patterns or money and think about what designing could mean for you personally.

Let’s explore that a little more.

What Do You Really Want From Becoming a Designer?

Let’s say your first answer is:

“I want to make money from my crochet patterns.”

That’s a perfectly valid reason.

But let’s go one step further.

Why do you want to make money?

Perhaps you want to have an income of your own.

Why does that matter to you?

Maybe you want to feel more independent. You want to buy something without worrying about whether you can afford it, or you want to contribute more to your family’s finances.

And why does that matter?

Maybe you want to build up your savings so an unexpected bill doesn’t cause you so much stress.

Maybe you want to take your children on a holiday you’ve always dreamed of but cannot afford.

Maybe you want to have more choices about how you spend your time.

Or perhaps you want to leave a job that makes you unhappy and spend more of your working hours doing something you love.

Do you see where I’m going with this?

Sometimes, what we want isn’t really about the money, the patterns, or even the business itself. It’s about what those things could make possible for us.

Your reasons might be practical, personal, creative, or a mixture of all three.

There’s no single right answer.

What matters is understanding what you want and why it matters to you.

How to Find Your Why

Now it’s time to start digging a little deeper.

Find somewhere quiet where you won’t be interrupted. Take a few deep breaths, grab a piece of paper, and think about these questions:

  • What first made me want to become a crochet designer?
  • What is it about designing that pulls me in?
  • What do I want designing to give me?
  • What could becoming a designer make possible for me?
  • If I never became a designer, what would I miss?

Don’t try to come up with the perfect answer.

Just write whatever comes to mind.

And when you have an answer, ask yourself:

Why does that matter to me?

Then ask again.

Because your first answer may not be your deepest answer.

You might start with “I want to make money from my patterns” and discover that what you really want is more time with your family.

Or “I want to design my own patterns” might lead you to something much more personal.

That’s where things get interesting.

You may discover that becoming a crochet designer isn’t really about the patterns at all.

There might be something underneath it that you’ve never stopped to put into words.

And that’s the part I want you to find.

I Have One Last Question for You

If your best friend, sibling, or child told you they wanted to follow a dream, what would you tell them?

Would you tell them to give up because they’re not good enough?

Would you tell them their dream is too big?

Probably not.

So what would you say to yourself?

Maybe that’s something worth thinking about too.

Because when you know what you’re really working towards, becoming a designer becomes about more than creating patterns.

You’re building towards something you actually want for your life.

Want to go deeper?

You can do this exercise on your own, but sometimes it’s easier when you have somewhere to write everything down and questions that take you a little further.

That’s why I created Find Your Design Why.

It’s a guided workbook where you can work through your own story, explore why you chose designing, look at what you really want from it, and uncover what’s underneath those first answers.

And you’ll have a record of your thoughts that you can come back to later — especially on the days when you’re wondering “Why am I doing this?”

If you know there’s something underneath your first answer, but you’re not quite sure what it is yet, this is where you can go deeper.
